Day 1: Journey from Nairobi and Arrival at the Lodge
We loaded up our Land Cruiser and van with family and eagerness for the ride ahead in Nairobi, where our adventure started. With each mile we traveled toward Maasai Mara, the excitement increased. In order to fuel ourselves for the journey ahead, we stopped at the escarpment for a fantastic breakfast and to soak in the stunning views
We proceeded to the AA Lodge in Maasai Mara, where we would spend the next few days. When we arrived, the happy lodge employees welcomed us and showed us to our comfortable wooden cabins. We were immediately made to feel at home by the friendly staff and tranquil surroundings.
We spent the afternoon refreshing ourselves from the road trip by swimming in the lodge's pool, eager to relax after the travel. Excited for the experiences that lay ahead, we got together for a delicious meal later that evening.
Day 2: Wildlife Sightings and a Picnic in the Reserve
In the hopes of seeing the Big Five, we left early for a full-day game drive. Elephants, antelopes, hippos, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, zebras, and even buffaloes were among the amazing creatures we saw, even though we couldn't see them all. The enormous herds of animals that moved smoothly over the plains and the large predators were not the only things that made the Maasai Mara beautiful.
In the center of the reserve, surrounded by the breathtaking Maasai Mara scenery, we enjoyed a magnificent picnic for lunch. The afternoon was devoted to further park exploration, more wildlife encounters, and admiration of the savannah's boundless splendor. Before heading back to our lodge for a well-earned rest, we spent the evening in the reserve, taking in the remaining nature.
Day 3: Searching for Ya Juu and Leisure Time
We headed early into the reserve with the goal of seeing another leopard, which the drivers and guides name "Ya Juu" in the area. Following clues from other safari visitors and tracking footprints made the quest exciting. Even though it was elusive, the chase was thrilling and gave us the opportunity to see even more isolated parts of the Mara.
We went back to the hotel to relax after a busy morning. We spent the afternoon unwinding; some of us swam in the lodge's pool, while others sipped cool beverages and chatted about the experiences of the previous days. We had a delicious meal as evening approached, which was the ideal way to cap off a well-balanced day of exploration and relaxation
Day 4: Farewell to the Wild
Although it was sad that our experience was coming to an end, we got up early, packed our belongings, and got ready to leave. We packed up the cars and drove away after a delicious breakfast. We made a final, unforgettable stop at a Maasai community before departing Maasai Mara. There, we witnessed traditional dances, heard about their rich culture, and even learned how to start a fire using age-old methods.
Soon after, we drove back to Nairobi while thinking back on the amazing times we had had together. Knowing we would return someday, we brought with us treasured memories of the wild grandeur of the Maasai Mara as we made our way home.
The Maasai Mara should be on your bucket list if you enjoy the outdoors, are an adventurer, or are just seeking a natural getaway. Until we meet again, Maasai Mara, Asante Sana!
